Three years ago to the day I started working at the CSU Office of the Chancellor in Long Beach, after about ten years as a faculty member and administrator in the film school at Chapman University. God, the culture shock to leave a campus and arrive at a public bureaucracy. I spent the first two years just learning the acronyms.
But didn’t really doubt I needed to be here. If you like higher ed because of its impact on people, then you want to be here, where they cover the long ground. For sheer value added, you can’t beat work in a giant state public system, even if initially it’s frustrating and inscrutable, and still is, from time to time.
